Data from all patients, older than 65 years at time of transplantation, who received their first or second deceased donor kidney transplant at our center between 2000 and 2014 were included in the study. Outcomes were compared between first (TX1) and second (TX2) transplants. Patient and transplant characteristics were reported prospectively to the Norwegian Renal Registry and these data were retrieved from the registry together with survival data. All patients who were included had previously given consent for the use of their clinical data in research. Last update of survival data was performed at September 1st 2015.
A total of 3812 kidney transplantations were performed from 2000 to 2014. Eight hundred and sixty-eight (23%) recipients were 65 years or older at time of first or second kidney transplant. Among these, 733 patients received a deceased donor kidney and were included in the final analyses. Median age was 70.9 years (range 65.0 - 82.9 years). One hundred and twenty-two patients (16.6%) received a pre-emptive transplantation, whereas 480 (65.5%) were on hemodialysis (HD) and 131 (17.9%) were on peritoneal dialysis (PD) at time of engraftment.
